Kurt's "History of Rock and Roll"

August 13, 2017 Larry Barnett

Kurt spent a number of years focused on Rock and Roll. He saw it as an authentic artistic expression and began work on a book, despite it being only the mid-sixties, he planned to call The History of Rock and Roll. He accumulated a large collection on vintage 45's (current location unknown) but a few, like the one pictured here, remain among his files. There is a fat folder of rejection letters among his records; at some point he gave up on the idea of getting the book published and moved on to other things. However, a portion of his manuscript is now available here. Some audio links to the tunes Kurt mentions have been added.

The Forbidden Erotica of Thomas Rowlandson 1756-1827

August 13, 2017 Larry Barnett

In referring to this book, one writer calls Kurt an "academically over-endowed art historian," no doubt due to Kurt's ability to find the fun in art that's being naughty. In Thomas Rowlandson, Kurt found a soul-mate, and many of the characteristics Kurt ascribes to Rowlandson -- his vitality, sense of humor, his mockery and mirth -- are applicable to Kurt as well. This book was published in large-format, hard cover edition (what we used to call a coffee table book) in 1970 by The Hogarth Guild. Kurt wrote the lengthy introduction and the text accompanying each of its many illustrations. The print run was small, and the book is long out-of-print; accordingly, it's hard to find and sought after by collectors.
